Money market accounts, explained without sales language.

A money market account is commonly discussed as a cash-management option, but the exact rules depend on the institution and account terms. This page is a neutral reading guide.

A headline like “4.9%” should be treated as an example to verify: Is it APY? Is it variable? Does it require a minimum balance? Are there fees? Is there insurance coverage? When can it change?

What to check

  • Rate type: APY, APR, introductory, fixed, variable, or tiered.
  • Balance rules: minimum opening deposit, minimum to earn the rate, maximum promotional balance.
  • Fees: monthly maintenance, transfer, paper statement, inactivity, or excess transaction fees.
  • Access: transfers, debit card, check writing, withdrawal limits, timing.
  • Safety: whether the institution and account type are eligible for deposit insurance.
