Fees are often written in a calmer voice than benefits. That makes them easier to miss.

Common fee areas

Monthly maintenance, wire transfers, paper statements, replacement cards, overdraft settings, inactivity, and excessive transactions can all change the practical value of an account.

The fee test

Before comparing two accounts, imagine a normal month. Which fees could realistically appear? A lower-rate account with no relevant fees may be easier to live with than a higher-rate account with conditions you cannot maintain.
